## Commentary

This small landscape on copper, showing figures in a landscape with ruins in the background, is typical of the idealising Italianate landscapes in the manner of Nicolaes Berchem which were one major aspect of Bout&#39;s output. He also produced a substantial number of topographical views of cities in the Netherlands, which are much more realistic.
