## Commentary

This painting can be considered an example of &#34;ruthless illusionism&#34;: unlike Titian&#39;s celebrated &#34;impressionistic&#34; &lt;A onclick=&#34;return OpenOther\(&#39;/html/t/tiziano/05\_1550s/07/lawren.html&#39;\)&#34; HREF=&#34;/html/t/tiziano/05\_1550s/07/lawren.html&#34;&gt;prototype&lt;/A&gt;, it is created wholly through a foreshortened sequence of muscular masses receding into a dark background. It is one of Campi&#39;s most significant works in terms of dramatic effect and closeness to Caravaggio.
