## Commentary

Small Gleaner Sitting in the Field c. 1853 Oil on canvas, 38 x 30 cm Private collection Jules Breton was one of the primary painters of peasant themes in the nineteenth century, strongly influenced by his own native traditions from northern France. He was a painter of daily life with an inherent and substantial understanding of the Italian Renaissance masters, especially Raphael.
