The church of Santa Maria Assunta di Carignano in Genoa is a large Renaissance church built according to the plans of Galeazzo Alessi. Begun in 1552, it is capped by a high central domein architecture, hemispherical structure evolved from the arch, usually forming a ceiling or roof. and by four smaller domes. The façadethe front or principal face of a building, especially one elaborately constructed; a blind façade is a façade that is purely decorative and does not relate to the structure of the building. is flanked by two bell towers. The interior, which is in the form of a Greek crossA cross with four arms of equal length., contains altarpieces by painters of the 16th and 17th centuries. In architecture, there was an emphasis on expressiveness and grandeur, achieved through scale, the dramatic use of light and shadow, and increasingly elaborate decoration. In a more limited sense the term Baroque often refers to the first of these categories. The development of the Baroque reflects the period's religious tensions (Catholic versus Protestant); a new and more expansive world view based on science and exploration; and the growth of absolutist monarchies. statues in the niches.
