Works in Florence Cathedral (1296-1302)
COMMENTARY
Although Arnolfo was probably summoned to Florence as early as 1294 or 1296 (for the cathedral there was started at about that time), he is not expressly mentioned in Florence until 1 April 1300, when he was exempted from taxes and lauded for his great abilities as a mason. Arnolfo is again named as the builder of Florence Cathedral in an inscription on its south nave wall. He could have directed the cathedral's construction only in its early stages, however, as he died before 1310.
