COMMENTARY
"Botticelli drew frequently, to such an extent that artists went to considerable lengths after his death to follow his drawings. We have some in our (drawing) book which are executed with great skill and discernment." (Giorgio Vasari)
With the exception of Botticelli's Dante drawings, only a few have survived of the artist's many studies mentioned by Vasari in 1550. However, those which we do have, bear witness to the high quality of Botticelli's drawing skill. Their execution is remarkably detailed, and the artist made use of various techniques in order to render his work as effective as possible.
