During his last years, living in the countryside near Aix, Cézanne worked on portraits of his gardener and of local people. These works were not intended to be detailed representations of the individual but rather an image of man integrated into his environment.. The image, constructed from fragments of juxtaposed colour, unites through the means of their identical treatment of the figure and the landscape.
