COMMENTARY

Dürer's other patrons for religious works were wealthy Nuremberg citizens. The Paumgartner Altarpiece, begun in 1498, was a triptych of the Nativity. Dürer used the features of the donors, the Paumgartner brothers, when he painted the two saints on the wings. A panel of the Lamentation for Christ was commissioned by the goldsmith Albrecht Glim.

The culmination of Dürer's early portraits is the artist's final self-portrait of 1500, depicting the 28 year-old artist in a Christ-like pose.
