Panel paintings: Panels of a dismembered polyptych
COMMENTARY
According to some scholars the panels displayed on this page belonged to a winged altarpiece which Giotto and his workshop executed for the Santa Croce in Florence. This assumption and even the attribution to Giotto is debated. However, the Madonna in Washington and the three saints in the Museo Horne and in Châalis form one group, while the seven panels of similar size to be found in various museums form another.
