This is a small-scale version of the statue of Louis XIV for the Place des Conquêtes (Place Vendôme). Hardouin-Mansart and Girardon were together responsible for the Place Vendôme that masterpieceA term now loosely applied to the finest work by a particular artist or to any work of art of acknowledged greatness or of preeminence in its field. Originally it meant the piece of work by which a craftsman, having finished his training, gained the rank of'master' in his guild. of the genreIn a broad sense, the term is used to mean a particular branch or category of art; landscape and portraiture, for example, are genres of painting, and the essay and the short story are genres of literature. Girardon's statue, which was finished in 1699, inspired, among others, the <a onclick="return OpenOther('/html/s/schluter/frederic.html')" href="/html/s/schluter/frederic.html">statue of the Grand Electorone of the German princes who elected the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. From the middle of the 14th century there were seven Electors; the king of Bohemia, the duke of Saxony, the count Palatine of the Rhine, the margrave of Brandenburg, and the archbishops of Mainz, Trier and Cologne.</a> in Berlin by Andreas Schlüter.
