After defeating Darius, King of Persia (330 BC), Alexander the Great goes to pay his respects before the body of his enemy's wife, who died in captivity. Lagrenée drew so openly on the art of the painter Charles Le Brun that he was accused of plagiarising The Tent of Darius (1660, Château de Versailles).
