COMMENTARY

UNDERLINED TERMS ARE DEFINED IN THE GLOSSARY.

Masolino, who is often regarded as Masaccio's teacher, belonged to the generation of Gentile da Fabriano and Lorenzo Monaco. He sought to accommodate himself to the innovations that were proposed by Brunelleschi and Donatello, but was never at ease with them. For example his use of always left something to be desired. History has placed him in the shadow of Masaccio, whom he outlived by many years.
