Without being commissioned to do so, Michelangelo worked on depictions of the PietàA depiction of the Virgin Mary with the crucified body of Jesus across her lap. Developing in Germany in the 14th century, the Pietà became a familiar part of Renaissance religious imagery. One of the best-known examples is Michelangelo's "Pietà" (1497-1500) in St. Peter's, Rome.. In a moment of despair, the artist struck off the left arm and leg of Christ. His pupil, Tiberio Calcagni (1532-1565) continued the work, completed Mary Magdalene, restored the missing arm and prepared a replacement for the leg, as shown by the groove on the basemolded foot of a pillar or column providing the transition from the plinth to the shaft.. After Calcagni's death, work was never resumed on the group. Michelangelo gave it to his servant Antonio in 1561.
