COMMENTARY

There are very few finished drawings by Poussin. When he was drawing his only aim was to get his ideas down on paper. These sketches were then developed into more elaborate compositional drawings, sometimes dry and schematic project drawings to show to a patron, but more often vigorous and creative drawings executed with brush and wash.
