COMMENTARY
In the 1630s Rubens painted rural scenes and many idyllic landscapes. These are the clearest examples of Rubens's new empathy for and interest in country life. In these years he had an intimate relationship with the countryside, where he had acquired his country house 'Het Steen' at Elewijt.
