The Church of San Pietro di Castello"castle", palace. played a central role in Venetian history. From 775 to 1451 it was a Diocesan Church under the Patriarchate of Grado, then it became a CathedralThe principal church of a province or diocese, where the throne of the bishop is placed. For reasons lost to time and tradition, a cathedral always faces west - toward the setting sun. The altar is placed at the east end. The main body, or nave, of the cathedral is usually divided into one main and two side aisles. These lead up to the north and south transepts, or arms of the cross, the shape in which a cathedral is usually formed. in its own right and the seat of the Patriarch of Venice.
In 1559, Vincenzo Diedo was the patricianoriginally a member of the ancient Roman nobility; from the Middle Ages onwards a term for a noble, wealthy citizen. responsible for calling on Palladio to draw up the design for the façadethe front or principal face of a building, especially one elaborately constructed; a blind façade is a façade that is purely decorative and does not relate to the structure of the building. of the cathedral of San Pietro di Castello. Diedo's death meant that Palladio's plans were not implemented (beyond a start made on the façade) until much later in the century, after Palladio's death, and they were then much altered by Francesco Smeraldi who had previously worked with Palladio.
The façade is another of Palladio's temples-within-temples, being a three-part façade echoing the interior. It is the work of Francesco Smeraldi, but based on original designs by Andrea Palladio.
