Fécamp lies at the opening of the valley of the Valmont River, between high cliffs. In the 11th century Fécamp became famous for its Benedictine abbey, which, before the growth of the fame of Mont-Saint-Michel, was the foremost pilgrimage centre in Normandy. The abbey of the Trinityin Christianity, the term used for the existence of one God in three persons: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit., which was destroyed by lightning, was rebuilt between the 12th and 13th centuries using the cream-coloured stone of Caen, and was restored in the 15th and 18th centuries. It is an impressive building with a lanterna windowed turret set on a dome or roof, used to provide light to the area below. tower 84 metres high.

The decorations are of three main types: (a) miniature, or small pictures, not always illustrative, incorporated into the text or occupying the whole page or part of the border; (b) initial letters either containing scenes (historiated initials) or with elaborate decoration; (c) borders, which may consist of miniatures, occasionally illustrative, or more often are composed of decorative motifs. They may enclose the whole of the text space or occupy only a small part of the margin of the page. Manuscripts are for the most part written on parchment or vellum. From the 14th century paper was used for less sumptuous copies. Although a number of books have miniatures and ornaments executed in outline drawing only, the majority are fully colored. By the 15th century illumination tended more and more to follow the lead given by painters, and with the invention of printing the illuminated book gradually went out of fashion.
