COMMENTARY

UNDERLINED TERMS ARE DEFINED IN THE GLOSSARY.

Archdeacon's Residence in Wismar provides a good example of a brick crow-stepped house from the min-15th century. In reality, the gable is single level but has crenellations. The wall on the gable end is divided vertically by niches and ornamented with oculi, lancets, and continuous mullions. It is noteworthy that a unified architectural style has been created, combining sacred, military, and civic forms.
