COMMENTARY

UNDERLINED TERMS ARE DEFINED IN THE GLOSSARY.

Wiesenkirche is an extraordinarily slim parish church built in green stone. Its construction started in 1331. The ribs of the emerge from the piers without the interruption of capitals, and the core of the piers is hollow, which means that they can carry a much greater load. In spite of its marked east-west orientation, and its culmination in a kaleidoscopic , the interior creates a single, completely unified space, largely because of the wide spaces between the piers and the slimness of the columns.
