The Cistercian church at Maulbronn is entirely , but is surrounded by monastic buildings demonstrating increasing influence. The , with its two aisles, the is admittedly already used, which would have made it possible to position all the springings at the same height, but the architect sacrificed this possibility in the interests of unity. With their red ribs, some curving outwards and some richly ornamented, the vaults form a contrast to the completely smooth, light brown walls. In the middle of the room the vault are supported by seven columns that make up the main, richly varied decoration of the room.
