The current building of the church was built on the foundations of a pre-existing church in 1482, commissioned by Pope Sixtus IV. The author of the original design is not known, though Baccio Pontelli has been proposed.
A main feature of the church and monasterythe complex of buildings used by a community of monks. Among the main elements of the complex are the church, cloister, chapter house (used by the governing body), refectory (dining room) and dormitory (sleeping quarters). complex is the Bramante cloisterquadrilateral enclosure surrounded by covered walkways, the centre of activity for the inhabitants of a monastery.. Built in 1500-04 for Cardinal Oliviero Carafa, it was the first work of Donato Bramante in the city. It has two levels: the first is articulated by shallow pilasters set against an arcadeA series of arches supported by columns, piers or pillars. In a blind arcade the arches are built into a wall.; the second also has pilasters set against an arcade which is vertically continuous with the lower storey, but with columns located in between each archThe pointed arch is widely regarded as the main identifiable feature of Gothic architecture (distinct from the round arch of the Romanesque period). The three most common Gothic arches are the Equilateral, Lancet and Tudor. span.
