Like his brother Annibale, Agostino Carracci drew constantly from life. This landscape with its cool blue tones is constructed poetically to lead the eye gently toward the rise on the distant horizon. The nude men clambering onto the rocks above the lake may be a tribute to Michelangelo's influential cartoonA full-scale preparatory drawing for a painting, tapestry, or fresco. In fresco painting, the design was transferred to the wall by making small holes along the contour lines and then powdering them with charcoal in order to leave an outline on the surface to be painted. In the 19th centurry designs submitted in a competition for frescos in the Houses of Parliament in London were parodied in the magazine Punch. From this the word has acquired its most common meaning today - a humorous drawing or parody. for the <A onclick="return OpenOther('/html/m/michelan/4drawing/02/01cascin.html')" HREF="/html/m/michelan/4drawing/02/01cascin.html">Battle of CascinaThe Florentines defeated a Pisan force here on 28 July 1364, taking some of them by surprise while they bathed in the Arno. The engagement is best known as the subject of a fresco commissioned for the Palazzo Vecchio from Michelangelo. Worked on at intervals 1504-06, this remained unfinished and is known (partly)only from a somewhat later copy of the cartoon, and from the contemporary fame the cartoon acquired for its treatment of the abruptly alerted bathers.</A> in Florence's Council Chamber.
