COMMENTARY

UNDERLINED TERMS ARE DEFINED IN THE GLOSSARY.

Because of the extremely Rembrandtesque character of a number of works by Van Dijck it has been assumed that he studied with Rembrandt between 150 and 1655. The present painting has previously been attributed to different Rembrandt pupils, but now it is convincingly attributed to Abraham van Dijck. The large figures, the colour scheme of red and gold and the dramatic are very much in line with Rembrandt's late style.

The archive catalogues no further works by this artist.
