The right hand of the Infant Christ is raised as if in benediction. As early as 1827 Heller observed that "this beautifully executed sheet is not accorded its proper due, for there are prints by Dürer which are inferior to it but held in greater esteem. It fetches only modest prices at auction." The picture can be considered as one of the most beautiful of Dürer's engraved Madonnas. The pear as pacifier, as opposed to the "apple of discord" or temptation, already occurs as an attributeA symbolic object which is conventionally used to identify a particular person, usually a saint. In the case of martyrs, it is usually the nature of their martyrdom. of the Virgin in a sculpture of the CathedralThe principal church of a province or diocese, where the throne of the bishop is placed. For reasons lost to time and tradition, a cathedral always faces west - toward the setting sun. The altar is placed at the east end. The main body, or nave, of the cathedral is usually divided into one main and two side aisles. These lead up to the north and south transepts, or arms of the cross, the shape in which a cathedral is usually formed. of Chartres (completed A.D. 1240). The pear appears on no less than five of Dürer's works, perhaps this was inspired by Bellini.
