The Maestà (1308-11)

COMMENTARY

The front crowning panels depict the story of the death of the Madonna from the Announcement of Death to the Virgin to Burial of the Virgin. Six of the original eight panels survived, panel 4 from the centre (probably the Assumption of the Virgin) is lost, and panel 5 (Coronation of the Virgin) is only a fragment.
