In the Haus am Steinplatz, significant work in the history of the Berlin apartment building, ornamentation was confined to the entrance, while the whole façadethe front or principal face of a building, especially one elaborately constructed; a blind façade is a façade that is purely decorative and does not relate to the structure of the building. formed a cohesive unity. The house was built in 1906-07 by August Endell and first opened as a hotel in 1913. The building later served as a retirement home, after which it was empty. After three years of renovation and remodelling, the new opening followed in December 2013 as a 5-star hotel.
The house is a structural testimony to Art Nouveau in Berlin. The corner building at Steinplatz 4 is striking in the dense urban fabric of City West, which is characterized by historic apartment blocks. By adding large quantities of glue and colour to the stucco mixture stuccatori were able to produce a material that could take a high polish and assume the appearance of marble. Indeed, sometimes it is difficult to distinguish from real marble without touching it (stucco feels warmer). elements and variously shaped lattice windows, and the unusual stucco, which is reminiscent of forest and night motifs.
