Lucas Faydherbe designed two important churches in Mechelen, the church of Our Lady of Liliëndaal and the church of Our Lady of Hanswijk, both realized fairly late in his career.
Although imposing as it stands now, the church on Hanswijk Street was designed to be even grand. It should have been one large round domein architecture, hemispherical structure evolved from the arch, usually forming a ceiling or roof.-church. Situated as it was on the slopes of the banks of the Dijle, Faydherbe had to revise his plans due to concerns of stability of the structure. In the end he settled for a church with one dome and three aisles.
