Lucas Faydherbe designed two important churches in Mechelen, the church of Our Lady of Liliëndaal and the church of Our Lady of Hanswijk, both realized fairly late in his career.
The façadethe front or principal face of a building, especially one elaborately constructed; a blind façade is a façade that is purely decorative and does not relate to the structure of the building. of the Our Lady of Hanswijk has a much richer rhythm than that of Liliëndaal. The articulation of the façade is achieved by monumental columns placed at different levels, which are completely free-standing. Faydherbe conceived the whole façade as a closed unity by giving great emphasis to the central portion as the principal motif.
In the interior the lively and unifying treatment of space is striking. This is achieved mainly by the interpenetration of a longitudinal and a central plan. The impression of space is substantially reinforced by the great domein architecture, hemispherical structure evolved from the arch, usually forming a ceiling or roof..
