There were cultural connections between Siena and northern Italy in the second half of the fifteenth century which were made more substantial by the presence in Siena of Liberale da Verona and Girolamo da Cremona, two highly talented manuscriptcollective term for books or other documents written by hand; in a specific sense, the hand-written medieval book, the Codex manuscriptus, often ornamented with decorative borders, illuminated initials and miniatures, and containing works of ancient philosophy or scholarly, ecclesiastical, and literary texts. Manuscripts were usually produced on commission. At first the scriptoria (writing rooms) of monasteries transcribed the contents of famous manuscripts and made copies. Monastic communities in the Netherlands and northern Germany began producing manuscripts around 1383/84. Flanders, Burgundy, and in particular Paris became major centres for the mass production of breviaries (prayer books) and Books of Hours. illuminators who worked on a large number of liturgical books for the Opera del Duomo during the 1460s and 1470s. Their work provided a graphic demonstration of the daring feats of pictorial illusionismThe painting techniques that create the realistic impression of solid, three-dimensional objects (such as picture frames, architectural features, plasterwork etc.) and decorative ornamentation that were characteristic of north Italian art at that period. They also introduced Sienese painters to the luminous effects common in the work of such painters as Andrea Mantegna, as seen in the gleaming pearls and inset jewels that decorate the page of a choirbook, shown here, depicting the Resurrection of Christ and four roundels depicting events after the Resurrection.
