COMMENTARY

Heinrich Keller was a talented Swiss sculptor who in Rome bridged the gap between the art of Alexander Trippel and Thorvaldsen, whose Jason with the Golden Fleece bears some slight resemblance to Keller's work.

Heinrich Keller grew up in a cultured home and had an early success as a scholar. It was perhaps this that first drew him to Asmus Jacob Carstens's circle when he came to Rome in 1794. His allegorical sculptures brought him success, in particular the Atalanta, which was commissioned by the British Maecenas, the Bishop of Derry.
