In this famous engravingA print made from a metal plate that has had a design cut into it with a sharp point. Ink is smeared over the plate and then wiped off, the ink remaining in the etched lines being transferred when the plate is pressed very firmly onto a sheet of paper., Lucas van Leyden indicated that the event - Pontius Pilate showing Christ to the people - had taken place in a foreign land, many years in the past. He imagined how people might have dressed in those days, and gave the buildings in his imaginary Jerusalem an old-fashioned look.
