Lorenzetto executed Jonah for the funerary chapela small separate place for worship, either part of a large church or a separate building. of Agostini Chigi in Santa Maria del Popolo. The statue shows a number of influences from the work of Raphael, who was the designer of the chapel. The statue of Elijah for the same chapel was completed in 1523 with the collaboration of Raffaelle da Montelupo.
The dynamic pose of Jonah reflects the impact of such proto-Mannerist figures as the ignudiMale nudes. The best-known are the male nudes on Michelangelo's Sistine ceiling. painted by Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel (Rome, Vatican), but the overall effect is awkward.
