Drawings of the Madonna and Child
COMMENTARY
During his long active life, Michelangelo drew several representations of the Madonna and Child, some of them the Madonna lactans type (in which the infant Jesus suckling at the Virgin Mary's breast). He had already used this motif in his youth in a relief he took it up again in the Madonna statue in the Medici Chapel as well as in various other drawings.
