Frescoes in Pauline Chapel, Vatican

COMMENTARY

By contrast to the oppressive appearance of the Last Judgement, the Pauline Chapel frescoes (1542-50) seem restrained. They have a lighter tonality and less striking contrasts of colour: violets, greens and blues predominate. Despite this colouristic mildness - which differs from most of Michelangelo's earlier work - these frescoes could not be called serene or lyrical. As scenes of conversion and martyrdom they seem unconventional.
