MORA, José de

Spanish sculptor, the son of the sculptor Bernardo de Mora and pupil of Alonso Cano. His important works are the eightGLOSSARYGroup of American painters who exhibited together only once, in New York City in 1908, but who established one of the main currents in 20th-century American painting. The original Eight included Robert Henri, leader of the group, Everett Shinn, John Sloan, Arthur B. Davies, Ernest Lawson, Maurice Prendergast, George Luks, and William J. Glackens. George Bellows later joined them. In 1704 José had lost his wife and had developed mental issues according to his biographer Antonio Palamino, whom he met in 1712. His brother Diego de Mora (1658-1729) helped to run the still thriving workshop around this time and the two created some of their most gripping works.
