The Villaa residence in the country (in Italy); villas acquired palace-like characteristics from the Renaissance onwards. Medici at Poggio a Caiano is Sangallo's masterpieceA term now loosely applied to the finest work by a particular artist or to any work of art of acknowledged greatness or of preeminence in its field. Originally it meant the piece of work by which a craftsman, having finished his training, gained the rank of'master' in his guild.. It was strongly influenced by Lorenzo Medici's amateur enthusiasm for Alberti and Vitruvius. The first Renaissance villa to incorporate a pedimented porticoUsually open porch supported by columns or pillars on the main entrance side of a buildings. Frequently supports a pediment. and symmetrical planning around a large central hall, it foreshadows Palladian types.
