BIOGRAPHY
Diego de Siloé, Spanish architect and sculptor, was one of the leading figures in the transition from Gothic to Renaissance in Spanish art. He was the son and pupil of Gil de Siloé, a sculptor of uncertain origin (both Orleans and Antwerp are suggested as his native cilty). Diego formed his style in Italy where he collaborated with Bartolomé Ordoñez. By 1519 he returned to Burgos where he carried out several important commissions in the cathedral. It was as an architect rather than as a sculptor that he emerged as one of the great figures of Spanish arts. His masterpiece is Granada Cathedral, where he took over as architect in 1528.

Diego de Siloé was one of the principal exponents of Renaissance architecture in Spain. he executed the Escalada Dorada in the north transept of Burgos Cathedral (1520-22). In Granada, he executed the choir of San Jerónimo (1528-43), and provided new plans for Granada Cathedral (1528), considered the finest of all Plateresque buildings. In 1526, he had designed the east end of Málaga Cathedral. In 1535, he designed a splendid new cupola for the main sacristy in Seville Cathedral, begun by Diego de Riaño.
His buildings reveal Diego de Siloé as one of the most original architects of the Spanish Renaissance.

Diego de Siloé's early works as a sculptor in Italy and Andalusia show the influence of Italian Renaissance sculpture; they are attributed to the impact of Michelangelo, whose work Siloé no doubt studied in Italy.
Perhaps owing to pressure from clients, Diego de Siloé's later sculpture belongs to the most conservative traditions in mid-16th-century Spain.
