Drottningholm Palace is the most important work of Nicodemus Tessin the Elder. It is one of Sweden's royal palaces, the private residence of the Swedish royal family. It was originally built in the late 16th century and served as a regular summer residence of the Swedish royal court for most of the 18th century.
Tessin initially used the design for Vaux-le-Vicomte, but complemented it with side wings and corner pavilions, producing a complex with two courtyards. The interior of the palace is dominated by a monumental staircase.
Construction of the palace and the layout of the extensive grounds was put into the hands of his son, Nicodemus Tessin the Younger.
