The huge south wing of the Gottorf mansion in Schleswig was built effectively as a separate palace. Nicodemus Tessin the Younger submitted designs for the new construction at the behest of Duke Christian Albrecht. Unfortunately funds were not available for the project and it was left to Christian Albrecht's successor, Duke Frederik IV, to oversee the successful execution of the new building.
In the political dispute between the dukes of Gottorf and the kings of Denmark, the Gottorfs had gained the backing of Sweden as a protective power against the Danes. It was probably no coincidence then, that the architectural structure and building proportions of the Gottorf mension resemble those of Stockholm castle, begun by Nicodemus Tessin the Younger in 1697.
The picture shows the southern wing of the castle.
