The church and an adjacent convent and hospital were founded in 874 by Queen Angilberga, wife of the Emperor Louis II. The monasterythe complex of buildings used by a community of monks. Among the main elements of the complex are the church, cloister, chapter house (used by the governing body), refectory (dining room) and dormitory (sleeping quarters). became wealthy due the granting of significant privileges and properties in northern Italy.
