Tile c. 1690 Tin-glazed earthenwareA ceramic product invented in England around 1720, which belongs to the category of fine stoneware. The porous white bodies are made of fired raw materials containing clay and kaolin as well as quartz, feldspar, and talc. A transparent glaze is applied upon the first or second firing. Earthenware, which is suitable for everyday use, is distinguished by its light, creamy surface. The most famous example of this category is made by the English firm of Wedgwood (since 1780)., 69 x 69 cm Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
This large tile belonged to the set which was ordered by King-Stadholder Willem III and his wife Mary Stuart for their palace at Hampton Court outside London. The Delft pottery, De Grieksche A, which was run at this time by Adriaen Kocks, was capable to carry out the commission. The building work at Hampton Court was brought to a halt when the queen died in 1694. The Water Galleryan upper story, similar to a tribune, running along the side of a building and open on one side to the interior; in a church (basilica) above the side aisles, over the ambulatory (central-plan building) and also over the west end. The gallery was used to keep certain groups of worshippers apart (women, noblemen)., probably the room in which the tiles had been hung, was demolished as early as 1700. Ten tiles of the set are now in various museum: five in the Rijksmuseum, and museums in New York, Delft, Copenhagen, London and Sèvres have one each.
