Tile c. 1690 Tin-glazed , 69 x 69 cm Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

This large tile belonged to the set which was ordered by King-Stadholder Willem III and his wife Mary Stuart for their palace at Hampton Court outside London. The Delft pottery, De Grieksche A, which was run at this time by Adriaen Kocks, was capable to carry out the commission. The building work at Hampton Court was brought to a halt when the queen died in 1694. The Water , probably the room in which the tiles had been hung, was demolished as early as 1700. Ten tiles of the set are now in various museum: five in the Rijksmuseum, and museums in New York, Delft, Copenhagen, London and Sèvres have one each.
