The only signed and dated work by the Swiss painter Konrad Witz is the Saint Peter AltarpieceA picture or sculpture that stands on or is set up behind an altar. The term reredos is used for an ornamental screen or partition, not directly attached to the altar table but affixed to the wall behind it. A diptych is an altarpiece consisting of two panels, a triptych one of three panels, and a polyptych one of four or more panels. From the 14th to 16th century, the altarpiece was one of the most important commissions in European art; it was through the altarpiece that some of the most decisive developments in painting and sculpture came about. of which only four panels (the wings) survived. The interior displays the Adoration of the Magi on the left wing, the kneeling donora patron who commissioned a work of art for a church. Donors sometimes had their portraits included in the work they were donating as a sign of piety. presented by St Peter to an enthroned Madonna and Child on the right. The reverse sides were dedicated to scenes of St peter: the Miraculous Draught of Fishes and the Calling of Peter on the left, the Freeing of St Peter from Prison on the right.

Originally it meant the piece of work by which a craftsman, having finished his training, gained the rank of'master' in his guild. of the altar. In what has often been described as the first topographical landscape inNorthern painting. Witz presents us with a stunning view of the Swiss countryside. The Sea of Galileea chapel or porch at the west end of some churches where penitents waited before admission to the body of the church and where clergy received women who had business with them., in fact, is Lake Geneva seen in the environs of Mont Blanc with the Petit Salève across the lake and the dark mountain, the Môle, appearing directly over the head of Christ.
